Comprehensive Guide to Wedding Photography Costs in the UK

As you start planning your dream wedding without knowing how much you will spend on your wedding, the question of wedding photography cost often takes centre stage. Capturing the essence of a UK wedding through stunning, high-quality images is a cherished part of the marital experience. On this guide to wedding photography, I not only delve into the intricacies of the average cost of weddings in the UK and how much a photographer charges but also shed light on the factors influencing the costs involved in every wedding. The average price of wedding photography in the UK in 2023 was approximately £1,500 for one photographer, according to hitched.

Key Takeaways on the Average Price for Wedding Photographer

  • The average cost to hire a wedding photographer in the UK is £1,500, with prices ranging between £1,100 and £2,300 or more.
  • Location, time of year, photography package inclusions, and the photographer’s experience can all impact wedding photo prices.
  • It’s recommended to allocate at least 10% of your wedding budget to photography.
  • Understanding industry dynamics and the components that form the total photography price can help couples make an informed decision.
  • Options for a budget price for your wedding photography do exist.

Understanding Wedding Photography Costs

When planning a wedding, it is crucial to understand the components that form the total price for wedding photography and what you get when hiring a photographer. Factors affecting wedding photographer prices include the hours of coverage, the photographer’s location relative to the wedding venue, the demand based on seasonality, additional equipment, and the number of photographers involved. Furthermore, it is important to note that wedding photography price can vary depending on the location of your wedding.

Factors Influencing the Costs

For illustration purposes, the table below highlights some standard components included in wedding photography packages and the factors that may influence their prices:

ComponentFactors Influencing Price
Hours of coverageDuration and scale of the event, additional activities requiring coverage
Photographer's locationDistance from the wedding venue, travel and accommodation costs
SeasonalityWedding peak season, off-peak discounts, weekday events
Additional equipmentAdditional lighting, second photographer, aerial photography
Number of photographersSize of the wedding party, additional specialized photographers

As an example, a photographer based in London where the living costs are extremely high, the service will be significantly more expensive compared to another photographer located in a place where the cost of living is lower, for instance in the North East of England. They need to charge more to pay their bills. Additionally, Hitched suggests that as a rule of thumb, London and the South East often work out the most expensive, and you'll also find that photographers in major cities tend to cost more.

Budget Allocation and Packages

Out of your whole wedding budget Hitched recommends saving at least £1,840 (10% of a wedding budget) to spend on your wedding photographer and that’s based on the average wedding costing £18,400 from Hitched sources. Packages in the UK often include a stipulated number of edited images, the time spent shooting the wedding and edit the photos, and may offer extras such as photo albums or engagement shoots. To make an informed decision, the list below highlights some key aspects to consider when comparing wedding photography quotes:

  • Experience and reputation of the photographer
  • Style and quality of the photographer’s previous work
  • Photographer’s attentiveness and responsiveness
  • Inclusions and exclusions of various packages
  • Contractual terms and cancellation policies

The Professional Wedding Photographer Experience

One of the biggest contributors to the price you see for different wedding photographers is the experience they have under their belt. Wedding photographers usually work closely with the wedding planner/coordinator on the day to ensure everything runs smoothly without any delay and to avoid having to ask the couple question upon question. The experience is also very handy when dealing with 100+ guests during group shots or when a rainstorm appears out of nowhere and alternative plans have to be made.

Behind the Scenes and Equipment

When paying for a wedding photographer, the only time you’ll see us is of course on your wedding day and a prior scheduled meeting to go over details whereas the majority of the work goes on behind the scenes leading up to and after your wedding day. You’re also paying for experience, equipment, travel, time, editing, communication, and everything else we do in between! A wedding photographer’s equipment can range in price depending on what brand of camera they have as well as which lenses they choose to shoot with. With all of the additional wedding photography accessories needed such as SD cards, hard drives, the software, and high spec computers we need for editing, photographers usually still end up spending anywhere from £10,000+.

Choosing the Right Package

It is essential to choose a wedding photography package that has as much as possible and covers the full day while providing you with the flexibility to pick and choose the extras that suit your unique needs and budget like parents album copies, pre-wedding shoot, USB pen drive, wedding photo booth, and videography. Sometimes it is worth spending a bit more and getting more for your money on your wedding photography coverage, especially for capturing lasting memories of your special day.
