Cornwall Wedding Photographer

Unposed, Natural, Relaxed Professional Photography

Hey! I'm Steven. I am a Cornwall Wedding Photographer. I have been professionally photographing weddings since 2004 and have captured hundreds of happy couples. Before I was a wedding photographer I was a professional music photographer working worldwide with big acts. My approach to wedding photography is simple: to create a whole story that documents your most important day in the most natural and beautiful way possible. Working on all that the pictures are captured for forever. I will always look to capture your special day naturally and organically, documenting the fun, laughter and happiness as and how it occurs. I cover set up, love, photographs of your big day directing you or your guests. I follow the narrative of the day and capture all of the magical moments.

What to Expect with Documentary Style Wedding Photography

Your wedding day is really a unique blend of memories, emotions, and moments that unfold in the most unpredictable and magical ways. Among the many choices you’ll face as you plan your wedding, one of the most impactful will be how those moments are photographed. Documentary style wedding photography, also sometimes known as a photojournalistic approach to wedding photos, is an art form that prioritizes the authentic storytelling of your wedding day.

What is Documentary Style Wedding Photography?

This approach tends to push those staged and posed photos to the side and opts for more candid photos with natural lighting, ensuring that raw emotions and unscripted events are photographed as they unfold. A documentary wedding photographer operates a bit more like a fly on the wall, just observing and documenting your day. The result of this is photos that are deeply personal and really emotionally-powered. This means the photographer prioritizes the reality of your day, and the authenticity of who you and your guests are as people.

Feature Documentary Style Approach
Posing Minimal posing; focus on the natural flow of events.
Interactions Capturing spontaneous interactions between you, your partner, and your guests.
Storytelling Creating a visual narrative that reflects the couple's special day chronologically.
Environment Uses available light and natural settings to create honest images.

Key Elements of the Photojournalistic Approach

An Emphasis on Candid Moments

One of the best aspects that you can expect when working with a documentary style wedding photographer is an emphasis on candid moments. This means your photographer will constantly be on the lookout for genuine expressions, spontaneous laughter, and subtle exchanges that naturally occur throughout your wedding day. Instead of orchestrating poses and arranging where you stand, they’ll blend a bit more into the background, really just photographing your day as it organically unfolds.

Telling Real Wedding Stories

Documentary style wedding photographers are also storytellers. They will weave the story of your wedding celebration throughout your images, which results in a really cohesive album and gallery. Each photograph taken is a piece of a larger story—your story. From the quiet morning preparations as you and your partner get ready to the fun dance floor at night, your photographer will be focused on capturing the sequence of events, emotions, and details that tell the tale of your wedding.

Minimal Interference and Posing

If you get nervous being in front of a camera, then you are going to love documentary style wedding photography. You can expect minimal posing! Rather than spending time orchestrating moments, a documentary photographer will really be focusing on authenticity and showcasing each moment as it really happened. This means more time for you and your guests to immerse themselves in the celebration and less time worrying about when their photo sessions may be coming up.

Why Couples Choose This Style

  • Authentic Emotions: This style focuses on showcasing the raw and unfiltered emotions, from the nerves before the ceremony to the celebration at the reception.
  • Stress-Free Experience: You’re not having to worry about things like posing or being something you’re not.
  • Unique Perspective: The photos reflect your unique personality and style, with images you’ll treasure forever.
  • Fleeting Moments: It captures those iconic moments that would otherwise come and go.

Behind the Scenes: The Photographer's Perspective

Understanding the beats of a wedding day is vital to producing wedding imagery that couples will love. Many photographers approach each wedding as an opportunity to document a shared experience, with the couple at the centre. As your documentary wedding photographer, they will quietly capture the story of your day as it unfolds, travelling with you on the journey rather than directing the action.

Professional Equipment Used

The best camera to use to capture documentary-style images is the one the professional enjoys using the most, provided it is a professional standard kit. Common choices include:

  • Cameras: Full-frame DSLRs or medium format cameras like the Pentax 645Nii.
  • Lenses: Prime lenses such as a 35mm or 24mm for tack sharp, fast shooting and a cinematic feel.
  • Flash: Used sparingly as a powerful tool when necessary, but rarely during a ceremony or speeches to avoid distraction.

Documentary wedding photography means your photos will reflect your unique personality and style, reflecting the true emotional depth of your wedding day without frequent interruption.

Engagement and Couple Photographer Cornwall

As well as being a wedding photographer in Cornwall I am also a professional couple and engagement photoshoots. I love photographing love! In which I do love having photographed couples for the last 15 years in Cornwall and the rest of the world.

Whether you are a new couple or have been married for 50+ years, a professional couple is a wonderful gift. I have photographed couples of many stages of their relationship.

I always make sure the photoshoots are relaxed, unposed, and fun. Not many people enjoy having their photos taken, including me, which is why I make sure that you are both relaxed and happy during the shoot.

Engagement photoshoots are a great way to get used to the camera before your wedding and are offered as part of my wedding photography.
