The Rise of Documentary Wedding Photography in Ireland: Capturing Authentic Moments
In recent years, there’s been a noticeable shift in wedding photography trends across Ireland. Couples are moving away from traditional, posed photographs, seeking instead to capture the genuine emotions and spontaneous moments that make their day truly unique. This evolution has given rise to documentary-style wedding photography, a candid approach that tells the real story of your wedding day.
What is Documentary Wedding Photography?
Documentary wedding photography, also known as reportage or photojournalistic photography, focuses on capturing events as they naturally unfold. Rather than directing or posing the couple and guests, the photographer observes and documents genuine interactions, emotions, and moments. If you asked me to describe my style in 3 words I would use photojournalistic, creative and relaxed.
My approach is laid back. I love documentary style photography, capturing all your special moments in a non-intrusive way. The result is a collection of images that reflect the true essence of the day, filled with authenticity and emotion.
Why Irish Couples are Embracing This Style
- Authenticity Over Perfection: Modern couples value authenticity and want their wedding photos to reflect their true personalities and relationships. Documentary photography provides a realistic portrayal of the day, capturing the laughter, tears, and joy without artificial staging.
- A Relaxed Experience: Without the pressure of constant posing, couples and guests can enjoy the celebration more fully. Your friends will think I'm just one of the guests! Instead of me being the 'annoying' photographer where I am continually pestering you with "pretend you are laughing" or "look this way" etc I simply stand back and let the day unfold capturing it as it happens!
- Storytelling Through Images: This style creates a narrative of the wedding day, allowing couples to relive the experience through a visual story that highlights the sequence of events and the emotions involved.
A Touch of Nostalgia: Why Analogue Photography is Making a Comeback
I’m a big fan of film photography so a lot of my work emulates various tones and colours that timeless film photography produces. This timeless approach brings a sense of nostalgia and artistic depth to your wedding album that digital images simply can’t replicate. Whether it’s the grainy texture, the subtle tones, or the unpredictability of each frame, film photography adds a beautifully vintage flair to your special day. Each one is a handcrafted memory that stands apart from the polished digital aesthetic.
Preparation and Services
Pre-Wedding Consultation
I always like to meet potential clients in person to further discuss their wedding day. This gives us a chance to get to know each other better and talk about your wedding plans in detail. Meeting in person gives me an opportunity to show you sample albums and fine art prints etc. My favourite place to do this is at a convenient coffee shop, usually being a Starbucks or a Costa Coffee.
Engagement Sessions
Your engagement session is an opportunity to get used to being in front of the camera. Its a chance to relax, have fun and create some brilliant photos that you can print out and hang on your wall! The session will roughly last 1-2 hours (depending on weather and location). After your engagement session I upload all the images to an online gallery on my website for you to view.

Full day coverage means full day coverage! Ill be there from the bridal preparations right through until the first dance. Of course you can chop and change this to suit the plan of your wedding day. Below is a summary of typical offerings available for couples in Ireland:
