A Comprehensive Guide to Wedding Photography: Bridal Portraits, First Looks, and Fall Inspiration
Bridal portraits are one of my favorite southern traditions! These sessions are dedicated to the bride getting all dressed up before the wedding day for portraits. It makes for a great trial run of all the things for your wedding day, including: hair, makeup, your dress fitting, jewelry, and flowers! I’ve seen many brides make last minute changes to their look based on their bridal portraits. So if you want a trial run of your wedding day look, this is the perfect opportunity!
Top Locations for Bridal Portraits in North Carolina
Where to take your bridal portraits? Most brides will choose to take bridal portraits at their wedding venue. If you want a change of scenery, or your venue doesn’t have availability for portrait sessions, there are lots of great locations in the area – free and reservation based – that are PERFECT for bridal portraits!
- Raleigh Rose Garden: Roses typically bloom May-early November. It features lots of colors and florals and is free to take photos.
- WRAL Gardens: Free to take photos. Azaleas usually start blooming late March-early April, while Hydrangeas bloom late May-June.
- JC Raulston Arboretum: Great garden year round close to NC State. They do have a public restroom and free parking.
- NC Museum of Art: It’s a large park with large open fields, tall grass, and magnolia trees. The outside of the museum itself is beautiful for modern portraits.
- Duke Gardens in Durham: My favorite place to take photos any time of year!! There is a $150 fee to take photos here + $2 hourly parking.
- Mims House: Beautiful white house venue in Holly Springs with a classic, southern style. $100 / hour as of 03-24.
- Union Hall: Very modern and great for a downtown Raleigh vibe. $50 session fee as of 03/24.
The Significance of the First Look Session
A first look is a big moment for a bride and groom. It’s a moment that only happens once, so it’s important to get it right on the first try. I’m always a big fan of these types of sessions because when a couple gets comfortable, the candid moments start happening. Dressed up in their wedding attire, sharing their first look in an intimate setting – this makes the reality of the couple getting married come to life! It’s so fun capturing their love for each other in this way because the moments in between the posed shots really show what their relationship is all about.
Romantic Fall Wedding Inspiration: Paige & Jalen at Bella Terra
I’m SO happy that Paige and Jalen are married! Their gorgeous fall wedding day was picture perfect and I absolutely loved being back at Bella Terra in Indian Trail, NC for their celebration. Burnt orange and navy lead the way throughout their details and outfits. Seriously, it was a perfect choice!! Paige carried a beautiful orange and peach bouquet that was stunning and looked amazing, especially against Jalen’s navy suit. Their reception details were to die for, too! Copper, burnt orange, and navy were everywhere you looked during their outdoor reception.
