8 Poses and Creative Tips for Your Wedding Party Photography
Continuing with my wedding content, I’m sharing 8 poses to take with your wedding party! When we were coordinating photo timelines with our photographers, they also asked us what kind of photos and poses we liked. My advice is to share inspiration of what you want and put examples in a document in advance for your photographers to refer to. Dive into these creative tips for snapping the most fun and memorable wedding party pictures, focusing on the full wedding party consisting of both the bridesmaids and the groomsmen.
1. Getting Ready Photos
One of the very first things you’ll do on your wedding day is get ready with your wedding party. It’s an exciting way to kick off the day and get glammed up with your bridesmaids or groomsmen. I love these photos in our bridesmaids robes and popping champagne. The guys also look super dapper in their tuxes!
2. Bridesmaids First Look
I had no idea bridesmaids first look was a thing but I’m so glad our photographers had us do this. It’s so sweet to see how my girl gang candidly react to my complete wedding look!
3. Bride and Groom Kiss while Wedding Party Cheers
This is one of my all time favorite poses to take with your wedding party. Our photographers directed us to go in for a big kiss while everyone throws up their hands in the air to cheer us on. This classic celebratory pose, full of energy and glee, is bound to bring out genuine smiles and laughter. The groom can also pick up or dip the bride. The result is both romantic and so much fun!
4. Wedding Party Walking and Making a Tunnel
I love photos that look natural and have movement. To do this, you can have the entire wedding party walk while chit chatting, giggling, and looking at each other. You can also have the wedding party create a tunnel with their hands up in the air while the bride and groom run through it. Their natural interactions and movements can result in some genuinely candid shots.
5. Bride and Groom with Their Respective Wedding Party
This is an obvious one, but you should definitely take photos with your respective wedding party. Your bridesmaids and groomsmen have been there for you through the bachelorette / bachelor party, bridal shower, and wedding planning process. Capture photos with your awesome girl / guy gang!
6. Bride / Groom with Flower Girl / Ring Boy
If you have a flower girl or ring boy, don’t forget to strike a few poses with them. Kids just make everything sweeter and cuter!
7. Silly Photos and Freestyle Interpretation
Silly photos are the best because they show personality and bring so much joy! It helps break up all of the pretty, formal photos. You can have the groomsmen hold up the bride or throw up the groom in the air! A good place to start is to ask them to "freestyle" and strike a different pose each time you count to three. Allowing each individual to pose in their unique style captures the essence of their character.
8. Individual Photos with Each Bridesmaid and Groomsman
Our wedding party consists of our closest friends so we’ll cherish these individual photos forever. Although we almost didn’t do them because of time, I’m so glad that our photographers suggested to do them after the ceremony along with family portraits.
Creative Positioning and Technical Tips
Beyond the formal shots and the classic portraits, there are various ways to get creative results. The more classic wedding party pose is to place them all in a single line; however, using stairs or a hillside can give the photos a multi-dimensional feel. Different layers can also help in capturing every face clearly and create a cascading effect.
- Movement and Energy: Line them up and get them to leap together! Try a few takes and don't worry too much if everyone is not at their full height.
- Candid Moments: Often, the most genuine reactions and emotions are caught in those candid moments between the poses. Always be ready to snap the unexpected!
- Group Hugs: A group hug encapsulates warmth, closeness, and the shared joy of the day.
- Unique Angles: Shooting from below makes the party seem larger than life. It's also not a common angle, so it creates a unique and fun perspective.
- Bouquet Placement: If the bridesmaids are holding bouquets, make sure that the bouquets are not accidentally blocking someone else's face.
